History of Indore
The earliest mentions of Indore are from Gupta-era inscriptions (5th century), which refer to it as Indrapura. Until the Mughal period, the region was primarily administered by Ujjain and Mandu. In the early 18th century, however, the rising commercial activity in the region shifted the local headquarters to Indore.
